KEVIN PETRIE : PRECEDENTS AND PERSPECTIVES The combination of glass and printmaking offers tremendous potential for artists accustomed to working with either medium. Printing onto glass first emerged in the 18th century and now offers a significant strand of creative practice across the fields of both glass and print. This presentation will firstly provide a historical overview of the development of printing onto glass and will then consider the work of a range of international artist using glass and print approaches. This will help to set the context for the other speakers in this symposium. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of ‘Integrated Glass Printing’ – a new kiln forming glass/print process developed by Kevin Petrie to translate drawings into glass. Biography: Dr Kevin Petrie is Programme Leader for the Master of Arts in Glass at the University of Sunderland. He studied Illustration at the University of Westminster, Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art, and has a PhD in Printmaking from the Centre for Fine Print Research at the University of the West of England, Bristol. His book Glass and Print is published simultaneously by A&C Black and University of Pennsylvania Press. The research for Glass and Print has inspired this symposium for which Kevin Petrie is co-organiser with Felicity Aylieff – senior tutor in Ceramics and Glass, RCA. |
