ANDREW MOOR : COLOURS OF ARCHITECTURE Until recently, Stained Glass Art has remained parked in a backwater - a prisoner of its own much loved but completely out-dated technology. This state of affairs remained virtually unchanged until the 1990s. Now, little more than a decade later, ‘architectural glass’ art has moved into a more central position and is becoming a partner to architecture and, in some cases, a language for architects themselves to explore. Thus expanding the vocabulary of materials, colour and form. We now see an industry that, despite not having changed for nearly a thousand years, has, virtually overnight, totally reinvented itself. It is a transformation that few inside the world of glass fully perceive because it has seemed so inevitable and so logical. But the world of ‘architectural glass art’ is not what it was twenty years ago. Today, there are few ‘stained glass artists’, they are now glass artists or architectural glass artists, or perhaps just artists who work in glass. The language, both of design and of the techniques used, has radically evolved, and the potential for the medium to be incorporated into new buildings has exponentially expanded. This often involves combining printmaking techniques with glass. The contexts into which it can and is being asked to play a role are expanding, and the scope of this potential has barely been touched. What the future holds is exciting to contemplate.
