Welcome Statement |
Post Symposium Overview
The day was attended by a broad cross section of professionals and students from both the glass and print sectors. Prof Martin Smith (RCA) and Prof Sylva Petrova (University of Sunderland) both welcomed the delegates. Prof Martin Smith chaired the symposium and following Dr Kevin Petrie’s opening introductory presentation, Andrew Moor the architectural glass consultant gave an overview of the range of approaches to imagery in architecture. This was based on his new book, Colours of Architecture. Per B Sundberg from Sweden then gave an amusing overview of his idiosyncratic approach to glass and ceramic design. Martin Harrison, the writer and historian, offered an erudite discussion of glass and photography with reference to the architectural glass artist Brian Clarke. Artist Steve Brown discussed his background as an industrial textile printer and ceramic artist as well as his new research into glass and print. The eminent Czech artist Dana Zámecníková gave a multi-media presentation on her life and work with specific reference to her digital glass print pieces, and closed the day. This symposium showed the blend of technologies at play in this area as well as examples of artists’ ‘thinking’ through materials and processes. It also offered new areas for contextual research, such as glass and photography. Importantly it allowed for links between the areas of glass and print and showed how broad and exciting the potential for development could be. Text versions of the presentations by Dr Kevin Petrie, Andrew Moor, Martin Harrison, and Steve Brown are now available here.. |
